Jamey Lee Ashley is suspected of shooting two Randolph County, N.C. deputies on Monday. The 36-year-old man is accused of opening fire on the deputies during a traffic stop.

According to Tuesday’s publication of Fox8 News, following the shooting, Ashley fled the scene.

Not far from the where the dramatic situation unfolded, a friendly pit bull mix who had been rescued by her owners from the local animal shelter, unwittingly helped lead the authorities to the man who was trying to hide.

After running from the deputies, Ashley came across an abandoned barn approximately one mile from where the initial shootings took place.

The authorities had been searching for the suspected gunman for several hours when the 4-year-old dog, named “Abby,” seemed to sense that something was amiss inside of the vacant barn.

Her owner, Michelle Williams, said that Abby began to bark non-stop the seemingly empty structure. Abby’s persistent barking inspired neighbors to phone 911.

It turns out that the dog’s instincts were right now track. The suspected gunman was discovered by the responding deputies inside of the abandoned structure.

Ashley was arrested and taken to the Randolph County Jail. The two deputies who were shot are reported to be in stable condition.
