A police dog that escaped a yard in Roseville on Wednesday night when it became spooked by fireworks has been located.
The German shepherd, Ivo, who works for the Santa Clara Police Department, jumped a fence at a home in the Roseville area at around 9 p.m. after his handler let him outside to relieve himself just as fireworks exploded nearby. His handler and others searched for him through the night and all morning without luck.
On Thursday afternoon, a resident of the area who found him and kept him overnight brought him to the Placer SPCA, and the dog and its handler have been reunited, said Roseville police spokeswoman Dee Dee Gunther.
“The SPCA had been on the lookout for him. He was positively identified, so we have a happy ending,” she said.
Independence Day is one of the most harrowing days of the years for pets, many of which are so startled by the sound of fireworks that they flee their homes and get lost or become injured.
The day after the holiday is among the busiest of the year for area animal shelters, officials said this week.
