Today’s Dog of the Day column comes with a feline advisory. Cat owners should consider skipping our semi-daily tribute to pups.
Michael Phillips was always a cat person. And then he met Isabel, who changed his life forever.
“I grew up with cats and she is my first dog — and she has convinced me that dogs are way better than cats,” said Mr. Phillips, speaking for generations of dog lovers in the millennial battle against felines. “When I come home at night, she’s right there wagging her tail and doing a funny tiny wolf-like howl to say, ‘Hello.’ I love it. My cats never did that.”
My cats never did that. Consider what is being said here, people: Dogs are pure love. Cats are conditional. In human terms, maybe you marry the cat — she’s complex, alluring, an elusive beauty. But you date the dog.
In this case, Mr. Phillips is happy with his lifelong commitment to Isabel (his human wife, Suzanne Phillips, is not jealous).
Residents of Clinton Hill certainly know Isabel, who loves a good walk.
“When she goes walking, her tail hair flows out in the air like she owns this town,” Mr. Phillips said. “She walks like she knows where she’s going.”
And she’s popular at local bars, too.
“She also likes to drink with us at Fulton Grand, where she’ll just hang out and relax,” he added. “No whining or nervousness.”
If she has any flaw at all, Isabel is a Packers fan. But she makes up for it with her “big dog in a small dog’s body” caninality.
“She’s very friendly,” Mr. Phillips said. “My wife calls her a flirt.”
