Posted on 27 April 2012

From: Seattle pi

Dog and cat owners in Idaho now have a new option when it comes to pet insurance.

Seattle, WA (PRWEB) April 27, 2012

Trupanion, the second-largest and fastest growing pet insurance provider(1), today announced an expansion into Idaho effective immediately. Pet owners living in Idaho can now enroll their cats and dogs online at Trupanion.com or by phone at 800.569.7913.

Trupanion has been working to become approved by the Idaho Department of Insurance since expanding into the United States from Canada in 2008. Trupanion is now active in 46 states, the District of Columbia, as well as all Canadian provinces and Puerto Rico.

“Pet owners often feel unprepared when their pet becomes unexpectedly sick or injured, and while they want to give their pet the best chance of recovery by taking advantage of sophisticated diagnostic and treatment options, the cost of these options are often outside a family’s budget,” said Darryl Rawlings, chief executive officer at Trupanion. “Pet insurance helps with the cost of treatment, helping to ensure that pet owners can take advantage of the best diagnostic and treatment plans available, extending the pet’s quality of life and keeping the pet with the family, without as much financial strain.”

Trupanion differentiates itself from other pet insurance companies in the industry by operating under a core set of values that places the health of the pet first. Trupanion offers lifetime coverage for dogs and cats with a 90 percent reimbursement rate and no payout limits per claim, per year, or over the lifetime of the pet. Trupanion’s policy is easy to understand and simple to utilize at the time of care.

Trupanion also offers a wealth of information on dog and cat breeds on their website, including specific pet health concerns associated with each breed. Pet owners who are interested in learning more about their own breed of pet can visit breedguide.trupanion.com.

“As we expand into new states, we are able to meet the needs of more pet owners looking for health coverage at a reasonable cost,” said Rawlings. “We offer a unique product that hasn’t been available to these pet owners in the past and we look forward to adding them to our family.”

(CBS/AP) NEW YORK – A puppy delayed several flights at New York’s LaGuardia Airport Wednesday when she escaped from her travel crate and frolicked around a busy runway.

The Port Authority says the 30-pound Rhodesian ridgeback named Byrdie scampered around the runway for about 10 minutes while authorities tried unsuccessfully to collar her.

Agency workers say they had to find the puppy’s owner aboard the Memphis-bound Delta Air Lines Airbus to help catch it.

The owner was led out onto the runway, where she called for 14-month-old Byrdie and the dog came running to her.

Puppy, owner, and all the other passengers and crew eventually got off the ground.

Diamond Pet Food to Recall Dry Dog Food

Posted on 26 April 2012

By Associated Press

From: The Washington Post

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Salmonella concerns prompted Missouri-based Diamond Pet Foods to recall a second batch of dry dog food produced at a South Carolina plant where production has been suspended, the company announced Thursday.

The plant in Gaston, S.C., is the same one that made mold-contaminated food that killed dozens of dogs nationwide in 2005.

A statement from the company said the recall includes one production run of Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul Adult Light Formula dry dog food. The Meta, Mo.-based company said one bag tested positive for salmonella, and the recall of four production codes is being conducted as a precautionary measure. No dog illnesses have been reported.

The product was distributed to customers in 10 states: Florida, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Virginia.

Production was suspended April 8 at the Gaston plant after a recall two days earlier involving a different product, Diamond Naturals Lamb Meal & Rice dry dog food. A cat food recall at the plant in 2009 was prompted because the food didn’t contain enough thiamine, an essential nutrient for cats.

“We’ve taken swift action and suspended production,” said Diamond spokeswoman Janine Smiley. “We take quality issues very seriously and will resume production when we can assure that our products meet our stringent quality standards.”

The latest recall covers the following production codes:

— Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul 35 lb. CLF0102B31XCW 27/JAN/2013, CLF0102B32XWR 28/JAN/2013

— Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul Adult Light Formula 35 lb. CLF0102B31XCW 28/JAN/2013

— Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul 6lb. CLF0102B3XALW 28/JAN/2013

The company said customers should stop feeding the food in question to their pets and discard it.

Happy Ending to Freeway’s Story

Posted on 25 April 2012

By Sarah Rohrs, Vallejo Times-Herald

From: MercuryNews

VALLEJO — For an animal lover, it was a horrific sight — a young dog on a rope being dragged on pavement outside a pickup barreling down the freeway.

Angie Porter still cries when she talks about it, and her son has nightmares nearly a week after they followed the truck, and then found the dog, since nicknamed Freeway, left for dead on an Interstate 780 offramp.

It’s a morning that neither Porter nor her son will likely forget.

Now, they hope for a happy ending to Freeway’s story.

Porter, a Pinole resident, took the I-780 exit toward Benicia off Interstate 80 about 7:45 a.m. April 19 and got behind a black pickup with tinted windows.

Both she and her 13-year-old son, River, noticed something flapping near the truck. To their horror, they quickly realized it was a tethered young dog bouncing against the vehicle and dragging its feet on the pavement.

For nearly a mile, Porter followed the truck. She and her son screamed, and she sounded her horn to get the driver to pull over.

“The dog was being strangulated and dragging on the freeway and flopping around on the side of the truck. He seemed to be dying,” Porter said.

As the vehicles neared Glen Cove, the truck driver took the exit, perhaps realizing what was happening with the dog, Porter said.

At the same time, the rope around the dog’s neck broke. He dropped, flipped several times and then slammed into the offramp’s concrete wall.

He Met Isabel, Who Changed His Life Forever

Posted on 25 April 2012

By The Local

Today’s Dog of the Day column comes with a feline advisory. Cat owners should consider skipping our semi-daily tribute to pups.

Michael Phillips was always a cat person. And then he met Isabel, who changed his life forever.

“I grew up with cats and she is my first dog — and she has convinced me that dogs are way better than cats,” said Mr. Phillips, speaking for generations of dog lovers in the millennial battle against felines. “When I come home at night, she’s right there wagging her tail and doing a funny tiny wolf-like howl to say, ‘Hello.’ I love it. My cats never did that.”

My cats never did that. Consider what is being said here, people: Dogs are pure love. Cats are conditional. In human terms, maybe you marry the cat — she’s complex, alluring, an elusive beauty. But you date the dog.

In this case, Mr. Phillips is happy with his lifelong commitment to Isabel (his human wife, Suzanne Phillips, is not jealous).

One flaw? She loves the Packers.

Residents of Clinton Hill certainly know Isabel, who loves a good walk.

“When she goes walking, her tail hair flows out in the air like she owns this town,” Mr. Phillips said. “She walks like she knows where she’s going.”

And she’s popular at local bars, too.

“She also likes to drink with us at Fulton Grand, where she’ll just hang out and relax,” he added. “No whining or nervousness.”

If she has any flaw at all, Isabel is a Packers fan. But she makes up for it with her “big dog in a small dog’s body” caninality.

“She’s very friendly,” Mr. Phillips said. “My wife calls her a flirt.”

Office that Regulates Pennsylvania’s Dog-Breeding Industry Is Running Out of Money

Posted on 25 April 2012

By MICHAEL RUBINKAM

From: Associated Press

ALLENTOWN, Pa. (AP) — The state office that regulates Pennsylvania’s dog-breeding industry is running out of money, has been slow to enforce new regulations meant to improve the lives of tens of thousands of kennel dogs, and faces charges that it’s once again going easy on operators of so-called “puppy mills.”

Members of the state-sanctioned Dog Law Advisory Board say the problems threaten to undo years of hard-won progress in the fight against substandard breeders who mistreat their dogs — and recall a time in the not-so-distant past when Pennsylvania was known as the puppy mill capital of the East.

“I see no leadership. I’m seeing nothing that shows me there is any concern about the welfare of animals,” said advisory board member Tom Hickey Sr. “Pennsylvanians care about dogs, and when they hear what’s going on, there will be an uprising about this.”

The panel intends to grill Agriculture Department officials when it meets Wednesday for the first time since Gov. Tom Corbett took office in January 2011.

An Associated Press review of documents, as well as interviews with dog-law experts, highlight why critics are concerned that Pennsylvania is putting enforcement on the back burner.

The Dog Law Enforcement Office didn’t revoke or suspend a single license in 2011, records show, while most commercial kennels received only one inspection last year, not the two required by law.

The office is only now beginning to enforce regulations that impose strict new standards for ventilation, humidity, lighting, flooring and ammonia levels, despite the fact they took effect July 1. And the new director of the Dog Law Enforcement Office — a onetime banker with scant experience in dog law or animal welfare — has told wardens to give slack to kennel operators, according to a former employee.

Former dog warden supervisor Diane Buhl said she quit in the fall because she disagreed with policy changes that made it more difficult for wardens to enforce the rules. Buhl said wardens could no longer issue citations, or contact Humane Society police officers responsible for enforcing animal cruelty law, without first getting permission from Director Lynn Diehl.

Before, “if we felt things were bad, we were able to issue citations,” Buhl said Tuesday. “Then the new policy was we had to discuss it (with kennel operators). We were told not to cite, but to warn them and go back.” She said that model — education without enforcement — doesn’t work because operators learn they can simply ignore the law.

Diehl also told wardens “we were not to contact humane societies,” Buhl said, making it harder to catch and prosecute animal cruelty violators.

Agriculture Department spokeswoman Samantha Krepps would not respond to Buhl’s assertions, but denied there’s been any change in policy and said the agency remains committed to kennel oversight.

Walt Peechatka, a lobbyist for commercial breeders, also disputed the notion that enforcement is no longer a priority. He said a 2008 overhaul of state dog law succeeded in driving bad kennels out of business, so it’s logical there would be fewer violations and kennel closures than in the past.

“The group that remains, by and large, are some of the better kennels,” he said.

The most serious problem facing state kennel regulators is the looming insolvency of the Dog Law Restricted Account, their sole income source. Funded primarily through the sale of individual dog licenses, the account’s balance plummeted 91 percent between 2007 and 2011, and the dog law office is projected to run out of money next year.

The Agriculture Department, responding to an AP inquiry, acknowledged that it continues to use the account to pay salaries of six employees unaffiliated with dog law — a practice condemned last year by Auditor General Jack Wagner. Krepps defended it, saying the employees, “support” the functions of the Dog Law Enforcement Office. State law prohibits the use of restricted account money for anything other than dog law enforcement.

Agriculture officials, meanwhile, face fresh criticism of their decision to give a kennel license to the wife of a man convicted of animal cruelty. After Lancaster County kennel owner John Zimmerman was convicted in 2010, he automatically lost his license to operate. But his wife applied for and was granted a license for a smaller kennel on the same farm.

Hickey, the advisory board member, asked Verne Smith, an animal law professor at Widener University, to examine the case.

Smith concluded that the department violated state law and “committed a serious abuse of discretion and the public trust” by entering into a “strikingly unorthodox” settlement agreement with the Zimmermans last August.

“To permit this settlement to stand would effectively permit any licensee convicted on animal abuse charges to remain in business as a practical matter by simply having his or her spouse intervene to secure a license,” Smith wrote in a memo.

Hickey submitted Smith’s memo to the Agriculture Department for review on Monday.

Krepps said the department relied on its own lawyers in the Zimmerman matter, but that “other counsel may have different interpretations of the law.”

Pennsylvania had long been known as a breeding ground for puppy mills when then-Gov. Ed Rendell signed off on the 2008 dog law overhaul. The legislation, two years in the making, was a response to appalling conditions in many large commercial breeding kennels, where dogs spent most of their working lives inside cramped wire cages, stacked one atop the other, and got little grooming, veterinary care or exercise.

A former Michigan State University Medical Student Plead Guilty to Killing 11 Italian Greayhound in 2010

Posted on 24 April 2012

by Laura Misjak

From: LSJ.com

A former Michigan State University medical student offered few details as he explained himself after pleading guilty to killing 11 Italian greyhounds in 2010.

“I got upset. I hit the dog and it died, and it happened nine times,” said Andrew David Thompson, 24, to Ingham County Circuit Court Judge Paula Manderfield during a plea hearing Monday morning in her Lansing court.

Thompson pleaded guilty to three charges of killing a dog contrary to law. Two of the charges were for killing two different dogs while he lived on M.A.C. Avenue in East Lansing between Sept. 1 and Sept. 30, 2010. The third charge was for killing nine dogs when he lived in Meridian Township between October 2010 and June 2011.

Thompson faces a maximum four-year prison sentence, with fines of $5,000 for each dog killed, said Ingham County Assistant Prosecutor Jeff Cruz. Manderfield will sentence Thompson on June 13.

Thompson gave the same reasoning for pleading guilty to the first two charges of killing dogs while in East Lansing. Those two were named Kensington No. 1 and Lauren.

“I was also upset. I hit the animal and it died,” Thompson said.

His attorney, Stacia Buchanan, declined to comment following the plea in Ingham County Circuit Court.

Thompson’s trial was scheduled to begin Monday.

Thompson said during the short court hearing that he is now living in Southfield.

Ingham County Animal Control first received an anonymous tip about Thompson in June 2011. That tip indicated he had owned numerous dogs during the previous year and they kept disappearing.

Investigators then found a severely injured puppy in Thompson’s closet several days later.

A student at MSU’s College of Osteopathic Medicine, he was suspended that month, a day before charges were first issued against him.

Thompson had bought the dogs in Arizona and had them flown to him, according to court records. Italian greyhounds typically weigh between 7 and 14 pounds.

In an interview with animal control officers, Thompson said he killed the dogs out of frustration or anger because they urinated in his bed, defecated on the floor or they wouldn’t come to him when called.

Thompson said during the interview that he would throw the animals to the ground or against a wall, grab them by the neck or beat them.

He would usually put the dead dogs in garbage bags, along with collars and other items, an animal control officer previously testified.

Thompson was seeing a psychiatrist at the time, according to court records.

Dog Rescue from a Hot Car leads to Drug Seize

South Florida is never the place to leave a dog unattended in a parked car. On Thursday two special West Palm Beach bicycle patrol police officers spotted a dog “panting and breathing heavily” in a parked car at the Brandsmart parking lot on Executive Center Drive.

The inside of a car is inherently dangerous to pets. On a mildly sunny day, the interior of a car can easily heat up to more than 120 degrees. Even leaving the windows slightly open or providing a water bowl will not make a difference once the interior of the car heats up to those unbearable temperatures. Heat stroke is a deadly disease, and even with medical intervention a severely overheated dog can die.

The driver’s side window and passenger window were open a few inches, and as the officers approached they smelled the “strong odor of marijuana.”

According to the Palm Beach Post, Raymond Hendry Zerba, the owner of the vehicle approached the police and told them he should not have left his dog in the hot car. When asked about the smell of marijuana and the smoking pipe in full view in the ashtray, Zerba allegedly told police he was a heavy pot smoker.

More than 400 grams of marijuana packed in sandwich bags were recovered in Zerba’s car.

Zerba, 40 has been charged with animal cruelty, possession of marijuana over 20 grams, possession of marijuana with the intent to sell, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

He is currently in the Palm Beach County Jail in lieu of $3,000 bond.

A 2-Months Old Child gets Kills by a Family Pet

Posted on 23 April 2012

By Denise A Justin

From: OpposingViews

A two-month-old baby boy was killed and dismembered by a dog in his family’s home, 30 miles northwest of Charleston, South Carolina, authorities said on April 20.

Aiden McGrew, who was born on Valentine’s Day, was in his baby swing while his father slept with a three-year-old child in an adjoining room. His mother, Chantel, arrived home from a medical appointment with the couple’s seven-year-old child to find the baby bloody and with his leg severed. She immediately called 911.

In an e-mail to the media entitled, “Today’s Nightmare,” Dorchester County Coroner Chris Nisbet wrote, ‘Today is one of the saddest days in my 20-plus years of being in the Dorchester County Coroner’s Office as I report to all of you one of the worst deaths I have ever handled.”

The dog, which appears to be a Golden Retriever mix with a large red nose, was recently rescued, according to reports, and is being held at a kennel at the Sheriff’s station.

The Dorchester County Coroner Chris said the boy had been badly bitten and was dismembered, but he refused to answer any additional questions about the infant’s injuries.

The Associated Press reported that an autopsy was scheduled for Saturday, April 21.  Although Aiden’s leg was completely dismembered by the dog, officials state that the infant did not die until shortly after he arrived at the hospital.

Chantel and Quintin McGrew’s two other children have been taken into child protective services pending the outcome of an investigation, according to reports.

Prosecutors are following the case and the sheriff stated that all the investigators will meet next week to discuss if any charges should be filed.

The family had two dogs—a Yellow Lab they had for some time and the mixed-breed dog that attacked the child, which was reportedly taken in as a stray two weeks ago.

Dog Killed at the Hernanado County Animal Services

Posted on 23 April 2012

By Maryann Tobin

From: Examiner

BROOKSVILLE – Hernando County Animal Services Manger, Liana Teague may lose her job over the controversial killing of a dog last week. Zeus, a black and white mixed breed dog, said to be “friendly” and “good with kids” by those familiar with the dog, was dragged by the neck by Kennel Worker Chris Lee and killed just 15 minutes after arriving at the Hernando County, Florida shelter.

“Things are at a breaking point,” said Richard Silvani, Executive Director of PetLuv Clinic in Brooksville, Florida. “This issue with Zeus is simply emblematic of an ongoing problem.”

Silvani said in an email that two kittens that had adopters waiting to take them to their new homes were also recently killed by HC Animal Services. He called Teague “incompetent,” adding that “she deals in half-truths to hide the facts, and is highly skilled in double-speak.”

Editorial analysis

Liana Teague has been managing the Hernando County animal shelter for 21 years with questionable results. And being eager to kill is not a new issue for Teague and her staff.

“On July 19, 2010, I reported on an incident at Hernando County Animal Services that involved a kennel worker who was complaining because people who wanted to adopt animals from the shelter were slowing down his efforts to kill them. “They have to stop sending people back here,” Kennel Worker Dave Krusko said. “I’m busy euthanizing.”

In addition to public criticism of HCAS Officer Chris Lee, who dragged Zeus by the neck to the euthanasia room, officers Cathy Evans and Terri Blake have been criticized for their lack of integrity and coldness toward the animals at the shelter.

Volunteer Laurie Boynton suggested in an email that in addition to HCAS workers being more willing to kill than adopt, she also feared records tampering as an issue. Boynton sited unusually long delays in requests for information, which I have also had problems with.

During a series of reports on alleged wrong-doing at Domino Effect ranch, I made more than a half dozen requests for the inspection reports at Domino Effect ranch, and was repeatedly told by Teague that they were not ready.

My first look at the inspection reports I was denied access to since November 2011, came when the subject of the inspections, Domino Effect ranch, published them on their blog in March 2012.

Furthermore, in the Domino Effect ranch investigation, Officer Terri Blake was the subject of an ethics investigation for alleged misuse of a government computer. Blake had gathered information from the personal Facebook page of individuals who had filed complaints against Domino Effect Ranch in Weeki Wachee, and emailed them to the ranch owner, Robert Ashcraft from her computer at HCAS. According to Public Safety Director, Mike Nickerson, the April 2012 investigation revealed that Blake had done nothing wrong.

A cloud of controversy has hung over HCAS for years and the killing of Zeus may be more than just a symptom of profound problems with Teague and her staff.

With all the questions surrounding HCAS that have surfaced in recent weeks, there seems to be only one left unanswered: Why should Teague and her staff remain in charge of the animals at HCAS if they’re proficiency lies primarily in collecting a paycheck from taxpayers and ignoring the rules whenever it suits them? (See slideshow for HCAS paychecks)

As a citizen of the Hernando County community and an animal rights advocate, I submit that Hernando County can do better for $147,325 a year in taxpayer funded salaries at HCAS – much better.

P&G Pet Care’s Four-Legged V.P. of Canine Communications Retires and Hands over the Leash to Her Successor

Posted on 20 April 2012

From: EON

MASON, Ohio–(EON: Enhanced Online News)–After more than 50 dog years of gracing Procter & Gamble (P&G) Pet Care’s halls and conference rooms, Euka, the 10-year young Labrador retired from her post as V.P. of Canine Communications. Euka was formally thanked by employees for her nearly-decade long run of dedicated service to IAMS and Eukanuba. A retirement party was held in her honor where an official portrait was unveiled that will be hung in the Pet Care wing of the P&G Mason Business Center. Following the celebration, her successor, Pawl Griffin was inaugurated by being presented an official company badge and bandanas of his brands (IAMS, Eukanuba and Natura Pet Foods).

“Euka is an amazing dog who has brought so much joy to P&G Pet Care employees, our community and supporters of IAMS and Eukanuba,” said Jason Taylor, external relations manager, P&G Pet Care. “We’ve enjoyed every moment with Euka and will miss her greatly, but we’re all looking forward to a new chapter with Griffin taking the reins as our V.P. of Canine Communications.”

Euka retires on the heels of spending the past 10 months training the youthful Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen (PBGV), Griffin, on all the duties of a V.P. of Canine Communications, including public appearances, making friendships with the other dogs, visiting Pet Care offices, and more.

“Griffin will handle his role well,” said Taylor. “He’s already done a tremendous job, especially at the AKC Eukanuba National Championship dog show in Orlando last December. He’s young and eager, and he’s been trained by the best.”

About Euka

Since joining the team in the summer of 2003, she’s been the official greeter of office visitors, represented IAMS and Eukanuba at corporate events and industry activities, supervised numerous shelter makeovers and visited school children to help educate them about the importance of animals and how best to take care of them. In 2004, her celebrity really took off when she became a national “cover dog” by appearing on Fortune Magazine with P&G CEO at the time, A.G. Lafley.

Loyal Labrador Retriever “Maggie”, Reunited With Family (+Video)

Posted on 17 April 2012

By SUE MANNING

From: Associated Press

A loyal Labrador retriever named Maggie, who was videotaped as she guarded the body of a yellow Lab hit and killed by a car in Southern California, was reunited with her family Monday.

A good Samaritan saw what was happening on Hacienda Boulevard in La Puente last Wednesday, called officers, put traffic cones around the dogs and took the video that touched hearts across the country as it made its way around the Internet.

Before Maggie’s family claimed her Monday, the dog was spayed and microchipped. The name of the family was not released.

Dozens of people called or visited the Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control shelter in Baldwin Park offering to adopt the sweet-natured dog. The good Samaritan was the first to fill out paperwork.

Officers were getting the dogs out of the street at the same time Maggie’s family was at the shelter looking for her, said Capt. Aaron Reyes, deputy director of the department.

Maggie is expected to go home Tuesday after shelter workers inspect her home, Reyes said.

No one knows who the yellow Lab belonged to or where Maggie met him, Reyes said. He had no license or microchip.

Maggie’s loyalty to the dead dog was so poignant and so risky that shelter workers nicknamed her Grace, as in “Amazing Grace.” The video shows traffic speeding by just a few feet from the dogs.

Maggie is about 2 years old and the family’s only dog, Reyes said. The family includes children.

Maggie’s family wasn’t the first to show up at the shelter Monday claiming the dog belonged to them. But it was the first family to have papers to prove it and to call the dog Maggie. Shelter workers remembered the family.

Even though she was groggy from surgery, the dog responded immediately to her name and the family, Reyes said.

The family will be issued citations for having an unregistered dog and allowing it to run loose and will have to pay nominal room and board costs, Reyes said, but the shelter did the surgery and implanted the microchip for free.

The good Samaritan who had hoped to adopt Grace was notified, Reyes said, and his reaction was “understandably bittersweet.”

“He had a lot of the same questions we did. How could they not have a license? Had Maggie had an ID tag or microchip, she could have been spayed and been back home last week,” Reyes said.

Meanwhile, adoptions are all about foot traffic, he said, so he’s hoping some of those drawn in by Maggie might consider leaving with another dog, cat or rabbit.

Baldwin Park is 18 miles east of downtown Los Angeles.
