BRIDGEPORT — A pit bull mix named Buddy was shot and killed on Harbor Street Monday night, police said.
According to Det. Keith Bryant, police responded around 6:40 p.m. to a call of shots fired and found several area residents in the middle of the street surrounding a black and white dog.
Bryant said the dog, Buddy, had sustained two gunshot wounds to the body.
Police said the dog was barking at a young man walking by and the animal left the fenced area it was in. Police said the suspect pulled out a black handgun and shot Buddy twice, witnesses told police.
The suspect — described by Bryant as a black male in his late teens or early 20′s, around 6 feet tall, with a thin build, wearing stone wash black jeans, black plaid, and a black and white hat — ran off toward the P.T. Barnum housing projects, police said.
The dog’s owner, Kayce Gillesbie, told News 12 that her dog, a rescue, was playing with kids in the neighborhood when it was shot. She said the dog was not acting aggressively. Gillesbie is offering a reward to anyone with information about the shooter, she told News 12.
The animal control unit and detectives responded to the scene. Police asked that anyone with information about the incident or the suspect contact the detective bureau at 203-581-5201 .
