The Joplin Humane Society held its adopt-a-thon over the weekend, but a couple of dogs were snatched up before it even started by an anchor for the Weather Channel.

Mike Bettes and his crew had returned to Joplin several times since the May 22 tornado struck Joplin and after he learned of pets needing homes he met two he couldn’t pass up.

“Mr. Bettes was here with the Weather Channel doing live remotes about the tornado, he toured the animal shelter and he fell in love with these two dogs, and I told him ‘we are sticking by, you can’t have them before the adopt-o-thon’ so he waited,” says Karen Aquino of the Joplin Humane Society.

Pilots and Paws is a pilot organization providing free transportation for animals in need and will fly the dogs to their new owner.
