KEWANEE, Ill. —Kewanee, Illinois Police say they are looking for two people after Twiggy the pitbull puppy starved to death and her sister, Tyra, was found malnourished.
With her tail wagging, Tyra is playful and seems happy to be alive. The pitbull puppy was found just one day after her sister Twiggy died of starvation.
“In the fourteen years I’ve been with the Humane Society that’s the worse case of animal neglect I’ve ever seen,” said Kellie Wallace, Shelter Director.
After dozens of tips, Kewanee police now say they are looking for more than one person, Tyra’s owner and Twiggy’s.
“Whoever starved and neglected and abused Twiggy we want to see that person prosecuted to full extent of the law,” said Wallace.
The two dogs were part of a litter of eight. Tyra has already gained a pound since Sunday, although she is still visibly too skinny.
“Our goal for Tyra here is to find her a good home, that she would never want for dog food, vet care and just be a happy puppy that Twiggy never got to be.”
Wallace calls the recent abuse heartbreaking, a hit emotionally and financially.
“When we get dogs and special cases like this it always drains. We don’t have money so we ask people to make donations for vet care,” said Wallace.
As Tyra heads to a foster home, shelter workers hope justice will soon be served for Twiggy.
“I try to harden my heart,” said Wallace, “When you’re in this business and you see a lot, and Saturday morning I cried for the death of Twiggy. It was just senseless.”
