Lockwood firefighters rescued a German shepherd that fell down a 20-foot trench on Monday morning.
The dog was out on a walk with its owner on Rosebud Lane across from Ponderosa Pines Healthcare LLC at around 5 a.m. when it took off, Lockwood Fire and Rescue Capt. Allan Hutton said.
The dog fell down into a trench box where crews have been installing a sewer system along the road.
“He fell straight down,” Hutton said. “But he was fine. There is some soft ground on the bottom. He must have been lucky enough to hit a pile of soft ground.”
Hutton said a firefighter was sent down the trench to put a harness on the dog. The dog was tied to the firefighter and slowly brought up with a rope and ladder.
The dog was not injured.
Hutton said residents should be wary of the construction area so a similar event doesn’t happen again.
“These obstructions and construction work is going to be there for quite awhile,” Hutton said. “If it happens again, people want to make sure they don’t try to go in. Call dispatch and get neccessary people out there because those trench boxes are dangerous.”
