NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – The Virginia Zoo in Norfolk is celebrating Earth Day on Saturday with its “Party for the Planet.”

Of course, anytime is a good time to come out to the Virginia Zoo, enjoy a train ride, all the beautiful scenery, and the animals.

But if you come out this Saturday, there’s a special Earth Day celebration.

“It’s ‘Party for the Planet’ and it’s celebrating animal enrichment,” Greg Brockheim, Director of the Virginia Zoo told WAVY News 10. “We give toys to the animals, enrichment items to keep them busy. And then there area also ways to take care of the planet, to create that stewardship for the animals and the habitats they live in.”

Visitors will learn how they can help take care of the planet. “All the things we generally think about, like recycling or reusing items, conserving power, water, and then also really how plants and animal-friendly gardens, learn about butterflies and what their needs are,” said Brockheim. “So we learn about those animals around us and around the world.

“We have different craft stations where they (children) can paint some of the masks that we have for our Asian Trail of the Tiger. Then we have other learning opportunities to learn about and browse, like what the animals eat and how we trim the plants here to feed to the animals. And then all sorts of other things. They get to play with some of the toys the animals get to play with; do some of the forage feeding type things that animals experience here.”

It’s a ‘planet’ of opportunity for family fun this Saturday, with the “party for the Planet at the Virginia Zoo.
