The Palm Springs Police Department is mourning the loss of one of their own: K-9 officer Ike.
It’s a loss felt throughout the community, tugging at the heart strings of animal lovers.
“It makes me cry, I love animals, it is horrible,” said Palm Springs resident and animal advocate Maureen McKnight.
Ike became a member of the department when he was just 10 months old, back in January 2009, the youngest dog ever purchased by the department.
During the shoot-out Sunday morning, the interim Chief says Ike did exactly what he was supposed to do, in chasing down the fugitive, who eventually shot and killed the dog.
Ike’s death is a heart breaker, especially for animal lovers, including Yvonne Scott from Palm Springs, who donated $25 dollars to the dog’s memorial fund.
“I am so upset over this poor dog,” said Scott.
If you would like to make a donation in remembrance of Ike, you can contact K9 sergeant, Jon Cabrera.
He can be reached at Jon.Cabrera@palmspringsca.gov or leave a phone message at (760) 778-8440 ext 6312.
